The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

Publisher: Mira
Series: No
Format: Digital ARC

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my copy, this is in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

"I've been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she has her dry cleaning done, where she works. I don't know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she's scared. But I will."

Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, at first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

Colin's job was to abduct Mia as part of a wild extortion plot and deliver her to his employers. But the plan takes an unexpected turn when Colin suddenly decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota, evading the police and his deadly superiors. Mia's mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them, but no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family's world to shatter.

An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a compulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems….

My Review

Mmmmm little book, you are dark, twisty and just how I like psychological mind bending stories.  This one jumped straight in, no messing no fuss.  Thrust into the story like a fast flowing river, I did have to come up for air to re-evaluate what was going on. It is a little bit confusing to get into, but when things settle down it's rivetting.

Three different perspectives and all jumping around from past to present.  I had to keep my witts about me to keep up with what was going on. Maybe this is the real reason why it didn't come in as a five star.

Did I gel with the characters, maybe not as much as I wanted to.  There was a bit of a lack of connection there, maybe again the bouncing from past to present didn't help with this.  But it was nice to see the story unravel from the different characters look on things.  I did start to think I knew where the plot was going, but it took a turn and I didn't have time to see it coming.  I do like a few twists in a  book, good to keep me guessing.  I really don't like flat line books as I call them, I do like a few heart stoppers to add adrenaline.  This book did have those I'm pleased to say.

If you like a good thrilling, twisty and dark read, then go for it.  It might not be the best thriller I've read, but it is damn good.

I do look forward to reading more books from this author.

Enjoyed this and would definitely recommend this to fans of psychological thrillers

My Thoughts on The Cover:
I like this cover.  The more you look at it the more you analyse the girl.  I would certainly pick this one up as it does appeal to me.  I especially love the title font and the way some of it is missing and the R is backwards, very interesting and eye catching indeed.

Goodreads Synopsis:

His wife, Juliet, is delighted. She, Alex and their son Ben now live in a well-appointed house in a leafy London suburb.
But all is not well. Juliet's research on the internet suggests that Alex is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) but pride means that he will not seek professional help.
Finding solace in web forums, Juliet is offered the use of a cottage and is urged to remove Ben to a place of safety. After a lot of secretive planning and the financial support of Alex's mother who had suffered at the hands of her husband, Juliet and Ben escape the tyranny of their home with the hope of starting afresh...

My Review
I don't normally go for books with military themes but this one seemed to jump out at me.  I noticed that it also had great reviews by people I really trust in the blogging community.  Well I can say they were not wrong.  It was gripping right from the first page.  I know when a five star book is in the making as I stay up late reading it, I love my sleep and usually nothing comes between me and sleep, but Who Are You did.  Yes I feel tired now, but it was worth it.  Explosive from start to finish and totally mind blowingly dark.

If you are fainthearted do NOT read this book, it is gritty and realistic and at times a little uncomfortable.  There are some disturbing moments and I did have to put the book down a give myself a moment before I could carry on.  I think this is why it was five stars, Elizabeth Forbes does not hold back.  This makes the book very realistic and also has a way of playing with your emotions.

At times I really hated the main character Alex, but on the flipside sometimes I felt a glimmer of pity.  Circumstances throughout his life have totally destroyed him.  The same for Juliet she has her problems too.  Flawed characters are so interesting because they are multi-dimensional, it does make for interesting reading.

I really did rate this book so I have gone and bought Nearest Thing to Crazy which is the other book Elizabeth has written. I can't wait to see how this one compares.

Things I liked about this book:
It was realistic, I've never had experience of PTSD before and this was very enlightening to the effects it can have on not just the person but the family too.

Things I disliked about this book:
I wish it was longer!

Overview:
A gripping and chilling read. I was hooked

My Thoughts on the Cover:
It's a bit menacing, there is something unnerving about the eyes.  Creeps me out a bit but perfect for a psychological thriller.

Goodreads Synopsis:

The stunningly fierce conclusion to Emmy Laybourne's Monument 14 trilogy.

The survivors of the Monument 14 have finally made it to the safety of a Canadian refugee camp. Dean and Alex are cautiously starting to hope that a happy ending might be possible.

But for Josie, separated from the group and trapped in a brutal prison camp for exposed Type Os, things have gone from bad to worse. Traumatized by her experiences, she has given up all hope of rescue or safety.

Meanwhile, scared by the government's unusual interest in her pregnancy, Astrid (with her two protectors, Dean and Jake in tow) joins Niko on his desperate quest to be reunited with his lost love Josie.

Author Emmy Laybourne reaches new heights of tension and romance in this action-packed conclusion to the Monument 14 trilogy.

My Review

First of all I will kick off and say how fantastic this series was, it gripped me right the way through.  I really thought Savage Drift was a great finish to the series.  I am sad that it's all over now.  I've read a few post apocalypse stories now and I think that the Monument 14 series is my favourite.  It  does make you stop and think about certain scenarios and is completely believable, biological catastrophes are just as likely to happen compared to natural ones.  Humankind can just as well manage to end civilisation if it so chooses, it's not just Mother Nature who can end things.

Really great characters and so nice to see how each of them evolved throughout the three books.  I think my favourite character would have to be Josie, I thought her own personal journey was amazing.

I'm  not going to spoil the story, if you haven't already read Monument 14 then go get a copy now!  Go on! What are you waiting for??

Each book in the series was consistently brilliant.  The only reason this did not get five stars is because I don't think it could quite compete with the first book in the series.

Overall:
Fantastic series, definitely one I would recommend.

My Thoughts on the Cover
I think the cover really does capture the story, it is detailed and I really like it.  It would instantly draw my attention in the bookshop.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Evalyn Ibarra never expected to be an accused killer and experimental prison test subject. A year ago, she was a normal college student. Now she’s been sentenced to a month in the compass room—an advanced prison obstacle course designed by the government to execute justice.

If she survives, the world will know she’s innocent.

Locked up with nine notorious and potentially psychotic criminals, Evalyn must fight the prison and dismantle her past to stay alive. But the system prized for accuracy appears to be killing at random.

She doesn’t plan on making friends.

She doesn’t plan on falling in love, either.

My Review

From just reading the synopsis I felt quite excited about this book.  I mean can you imagine what would happen if you got locked up with 9 potentially lethal criminals, it sounded like the survival of the fittest.  Yes, it does scream a little bit like a Hunger Games themed book, but that is where the similarities end.  It is more graphic and yes there are bloody deaths, but the way it plays with the prisoners is sheer evil.  You do get to see them as more than just criminals, suddenly a bit of compassion kicks in.  They have all committed crimes, but you should never judge people until you get to know the real person.

I did enjoy this book, but I wouldn't say it blew me away.  I would like to read book two in the series just to see where this goes.

Some of the characters I didn't really care about, their life in the compass room was just a blur, but the main character Evalyn was the most interesting. Evalynn was multi dimensional and a very complicated person to understand, I think as the story progressed I seemed to see a different person.

I think the main reason this didn't get full marks from me is that even though there was a lot of action in the book, it still didn't grip me fully.

 photo 4-star.png
Overall:
A thrilling and deadly ride

My Thoughts on the Cover:
I think the blood spatters are clever, it does hint that there will be violence and death.  I do like this cover and I like the title font and colour scheme.

Goodreads Synopsis:

From the author of A WITCH IN WINTER comes a brand new trilogy - for fans of Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices series

London, 1880, and eighteen-year-old Luke Lexton is about to endure his initiation into the Malleus Maleficorum - the secretive brotherhood devoted to hunting witches, and the organisation that will help Luke take revenge on the witch who murdered his parents. His final test is to pick a name at random from the Book of Witches, a name he must track down and kill within a month, or face death himself.

Luke picks out sixteen-year-old Rosa Greenwood, a witch-girl living in rapidly fading grandeur on the west side of town. She's the last bargaining chip in her family's struggle to avoid bankruptcy and is about to be married off to the handsome, cruel, grotesquely rich Sebastian Knyvet. But as Rosa and Luke get to know each other, Luke realises it will be impossible for him to kill her.
How do you kill someone you're falling in love with?

My Review

I've wanted to read this book for some time, it seems just my kind of book.  I was not disappointed, I fell straight in love with the world Ruth Warburton has created.  It was magical, yet realistic.   I must admit I know very little about the period this book was set in (Victorian), but I found there were some very enlightening snippets which gave a good reflection of what life could have been like then.

This is the first book I have read by this author, it certainly will not be the last.  I believe the first series the author released - The Winter Trilogy - is also based in the same world as the Witch Finder.  But I found I could read this book without first having to read that series first.  It all made perfect sense and I could lose myself in the book without having to think what the heck was going on.

I will shortly be reading book two, it is sat waiting on my bookcase,  I have to say I am really interested to see what happens to Luke and Rosa next.

The world and the flow of the writing made this a very enjoyable read.  Lots of different characters, some villains thrown in for a bit of excitement.  I think my favourite character would have to be Rosa, she is the complete opposite of how she is perceived by some of the characters and it was really nice to see her blossom throughout the book.

Yes I do recommend this, especially if you like witches and a nice bit of romance thrown into the mix.

Overview
A great story rolled into a mash of magic, treachery and romance.

My Thoughts on the Cover
I do like this cover, if you look deeper there is a lot of detail going on.  The colour scheme is pretty and makes the girls hair stand out.   Simply quite lovely, and I would be drawn to this in the bookshop.

Greece, 1980

Emma takes part in a shattering, violent event. An event to which she is anything but an innocent bystander.
She is only eighteen, but this marks her fall from innocence.
It will haunt her for the rest of her life.

London, now

Kate has the perfect existence: a glossy image, a glamorous home, a perfect family.
But there are cracks.
All is not what it seems.

And now the two worlds are about to collide.
Somebody's out for revenge.
Someone who has been waiting thirty years...

My Review

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  It hooked me in and was dark and twisty, a psychologically gripping read.  The only reason this lost out of full marks for me as I kind of guessed the ending about two thirds of the way.  I like books to have that oh my! factor, this sadly didn't happen because of the way I could see where the plot was going.

Love, betrayal and guilt..... very powerful weapons to twist and manipulate the mind.  It was like watching a ball of wool unravelling until there was nothing left.

One thing I was a bit frustrated about was that even though the main character was under a lot of pressure I was sure she would have acted differently to certain situations.  I did feel myself saying what are you doing! But this did no way disengage me from the characters or the plot.  The characters are very real and believable.

I really don't want  to spoil the plot by giving away details of the story.  For this type of book it is best to go in with fresh eyes, but be warned it is chilling and shows how twisted the human mind can be.

This is the first book I have read by this author, I do have another of her books on my bookcase (Cuckoo), I will definitely be bumping up her books on my to read pile.  I will be interested to see if she is a master of weaving a mind thrilling read.

I would recommend this book for readers who are looking for a gripping and thrilling read.

Blog Tour - Addicted by Tracy Wolff

Hi Guys! For my stop of the Addicted blog tour I'm thrilled to bring you an excerpt.  There's also a rafflecopter giveaway below.

Take a peek and see what you think.

Excerpt

Ethan. Ethan. Ethan.

His name is pounding in my blood, a mantra in my soul.

Ethan. Ethan. Ethan.

All that work. All those hours and days of trying to move on. All those assurances to myself that I had this, that I could do it. All of it blown out of the water in one fell swoop.

Ethan. Ethan. Ethan.

He’s here, right here in front of me. And despite everything, it’s all I can do not to fall straight into him. I don’t know what to do, what to say, how to act. There’s a part of me that wants nothing more than to run across the room and throw myself into his lap. To bury my face in his neck and beg him to never let me go. To pretend that the last two weeks never happened and that, somehow, someway, all the pain, all the agony, was nothing but a nightmare gone awry.

But there’s another part—equally as big and equally as important—that wants to run away. Or at least dive behind the nearest chair and not come out until he’s gone. Until he’s no longer looking at me like he saw a ghost.

Or worse.

Of the two choices, the second is definitely the smarter one. Humiliating, yes. Unprofessional, absolutely. But still so much better than standing here remembering what it feels like to be held by him.

To be loved by him.

And yet, even knowing what a terrible idea it is, I can’t stop myself from taking a step toward him, then another and another. In seconds, I’m standing right in front of him, close enough to touch his soft hair and smoothly shaven cheeks. Close enough to register the uneven rise and fall of his chest beneath the navy silk of his shirt. More than close enough to feel his heartbeat if I just reach out and stroke my hands down his chest as I’m longing to do.

“Ethan.” His name is a tortured sound ripped from me, half whisper, half sob, but I can see by the way his eyes narrow and his fists clench that he hears me. Can tell by the way he looks at me that he understands all the things I don’t have the words to say.

He doesn’t react for a long time, doesn’t so much as move a muscle. Then, suddenly, he’s leaning forward in his chair, and I think that he’s going to be the one to do it, to break the oh-so-fragile understanding between us. To touch me the way I’ve been longing to be touched from the moment I left him in that parking lot.

But then his eyes go blank and he’s looking through me like I’m not even here.

Or worse, like I never was.

Book Spotlight: Lost in Starlight by Sherry Soule

“Excerpt of LOST IN STARLIGHT” - #StarlightSaga
by author Sherry Soule”

Today author, Sherry Soule has some exciting news to share with us! She has published a brand new upper YA series: the “Starlight Saga” (paranormal romance with a Sci-Fi concept) with scorching-hot character chemistry and exciting suspense. To help promote this interstellar love story, “LOST IN STARLIGHT,” Sherry is doing this guest post to share the news with fellow booklovers. Enjoy one her favorite character moments!
When Romeo and Juliet Go Intergalactic!
Hayden’s expression warms. “You’re a fascinating girl, Sloane.”
I flash him a smile. “You have no idea.”
He reaches out and his large hand holds my smaller one for a brief instant. My heart starts bouncing around my ribcage like a ping-pong ball. I lean back. Safety in distance.
“Besides a love of scary movies, hanging in graveyards, and eating cheeseburgers, what do you like to do?” he asks.
“I don’t know…stuff like reading graphic novels or shopping with my friends. And sometimes I like to stay up late and watch zombie flicks while munching on popcorn. The usual.”
“A lot of people are into vampires right now. So why are zombies your favorite?”
Ah, a topic I love chatting about!
“They just are. I mean, sure, vampires are way cooler, but zombies are so much creepier. Bloodsuckers have nothing on flesh eaters when it comes to giving me a good scare. I think it’s because vamps are mythical creatures, and in an apocalyptic scenario, zombies actually seem much more realistic and scientifically possible.”
“You have an apocalypse emergency plan ready?”
“Oh, yeah. Learned all I need to know by watching The Walking Dead.” I wink at him. “I always kind of figured if there was an actual virus outbreak it would be like a form of rabies. Makes more sense, you know? I have a pack full of stuff in our garage, several bottles of water, some non-perishable food, first aid supplies, duct tape, Army knife, and a blanket. Even mapped out an evacuation route from my house to the woods.”
Hayden shifts and turns toward me. “I’m impressed. You can definitely join my survival team.”
“Ha! You can join mine. The control-freak in me has to be the leader. If you’re cool with that, then we can join forces.”
His lips twitch into a slight smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “So, which Walking Dead character would you be?”
“Michonne—duh! That chick is just all kinds of badass samurai.”
He shakes his head, that small smile still gracing his lips. “Do you even know anything about handling swords?”
“Nope. But I’m a quick study.” I twirl my straw. “What about you?”
“Ah, Carl is freakin’ hardcore. But I guess, Daryl, because he’s more of a rebel and survivalist. And that crossbow? Awesome.”

High school is tough. Romance with a sexy alien—even tougher.
Star reporter Sloane Masterson knows she has one helluva story when she witnesses hottie Hayden Lancaster bending forks with his mind.
Like any good journalist, Sloane sets out to uncover the truth, even if it includes a little stalking. When the superhuman feats start to pile up and the undeniable heat rises between them, Hayden has no choice but to reveal his secret: he’s an alien hybrid.
They’re as different as night and day—she’s a curvy, purple-haired, horror junkie and he’s a smoking hot, antisocial, brainiac—yet the intense fascination between them refuses to go away. Even at Hayden’s insistence that dating each other is “off limits” and dangerous, their fiery attraction threatens to go supernova.
Now Sloane’s dealing with creepy government agents, über snobby extraterrestrials, and a psycho alien ex-girlfriend out for revenge. After a crash course on the rules of interstellar dating, Sloane must decide if their star-crossed romance is worth risking her own life....

Blog Tour - The Long Fall by Julia Crouch

Hi Everyone! I was really thrilled to be asked to take part in this blog tour - The Long Fall by Julia Crouch.  I'm currently reading the book attached to the tour, I'm about half way through and the book is excellent. It seems fully of mystery, tension and the main character is quite complex, which is what I really like in a book.

Extract from The Long Fall

EMMA

23 July 1980, 9 p.m. Marseille. Youth Hostel.

Today is the worst day of my life.
Something worse than anything I ever thought would happen to me has happened.
To me. The bright girl with the brilliant future.
To me. The fucking stupid girl.
I’m on my own in the youth hostel girls’ dorm. The laughter of Hans the warden and the German boys in the big hall downstairs jumbles with the Jimi Hendrix, echoing up the stone stairs and travelling down the corridors to tangle in my ears.
They bought wine and cooked up some moules and invited me to eat with them.
But I can’t.
I don’t know what to do.
I don’t know what to do.
I don’t know what to do.
I can’t believe it really.
To make sure it actually happened, I’m going to write it all down, even though it’s going to hurt, every detail I can remember.

So, after my late lunch and a stretch out on the beach, I get the bus back up from town and take the pretty, grassy footpath that runs from the bus stop to the youth hostel, between the high stone wall of the old chateau and the high metal-fenced boundary of another large property. It’s quiet, late afternoon, still light. The wind has dropped and the sky sings with blue.
I’m happy.
I was happy.
A thickset man is up about a hundred yards ahead of me, walking in the same direction. I think nothing of it. I only even frown slightly when he reaches the end of the path, turns and starts walking back towards me.
I think perhaps he’s forgotten something. As he gets closer, I notice he’s got sunglasses on and this red cotton scarf tied around the lower part of his face, like a cowboy. I look away, keep moving. But I wrap the strap of my day bag around my hand, ready to swipe if I need to.
Even then I think I’m being stupid. I still have the chance to turn and run, but I don’t do it.

You see, I thought at the time that it would have been insulting. I had to give him the benefit of the doubt. Just because he was a thickset man with a scarf over his face didn’t necessarily mean he was going to be a danger to me.

But.
