Author Interview: Ruth Warburton

I was born and brought up in Sussex on the south coast of England, and I spent most of my childhood in the town of Lewes; a small town with a long history.
At university I studied English Language and Literature at the University of Manchester, and the course included Old English and Middle English texts. While I was researching A Witch in Winter I found myself returning to them, in particular to Beowulf and Le Morte D’Arthur. Seeds from these mixed with ancient Mesopotamian demons, Voodoo spells, Tudor superstitions and 15th century witch-hunting guides to create the Winter Trilogy.
Now I live in North London in a house full of boys, and I work as a publicist in the day, and a writer by night. A Witch in Winter is my first book.

I'm really excited to welcome Ruth Warburton to Chocolate Chunky Munkie.  Ruth is author of A Witch In Winter and more recently A Witch In Love.  Thank you Ruth for taking time to answer my questions :D

1. If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Shakespeare. I think he'd be a riot, probably very funny and charming. And I could ask him all sorts of questions that have plagued scholars for ages, like the identity of the Dark Lady and why he left his wife his second-best bed. I also think he would be fascinated by modern life and very good on twitter.

2. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
I'm pretty happy here. I love Paris, but I miss speaking English too much to live abroad forever.

3. If you could travel back in time to a certain event in history, what would it be?
I'm guessing I wouldn't be allowed to affect the outcome? In theory it would be fascinating to go back to something like the shooting of JFK and find out the truth, but I think in reality I couldn't deal with the horror of standing there waiting for a murder to happen, and not being allowed to do anything about it. I think I'd rather go back to something happier - like VE day in 1945. It would be amazing to stand in the crowd in Parliament Square and listen to Churchill's speech and hear and see the reaction of the people.

4. Favourite fictional character?
Really too hard to pick because I love so many! But today I'm going to say Anne of Green Gables. Just because.

5. If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. With whom would it be?
I'd quite like to be Hermione Granger in the first week at Hogwarts. I always wanted to go to boarding school and I think Hogwarts would be the ideal one - boarding school with added magic, and good food.

6. What is the last book you read?
A London Girl of the 1880s by M V Hughes.

 About The Books:

A Witch In Winter - Book #1

Goodreads Synopsis:

Anna Winterson doesn't know she's a witch and would probably mock you for believing in magic, but after moving to the small town of Winter with her father, she learns more than she ever wanted to about power. When Anna meets Seth, she is smitten, but when she enchants him to love her, she unwittingly amplifies a deadly conflict between two witch clans and splits her own heart in two. She wants to love Seth, to let him love her – but if it is her magic that's controlling his passion, then she is as monstrous as the witch clan who are trying to use her amazing powers for their own gain.

Although a perfect fit for the paranormal romance genre, A WITCH IN WINTER avoids fangs, excessive body hair and submissive female leads, and tells the heart-wrenching story of a couple meant to be together, but being forced apart. Seth is utterly irresistible and Anna is an empowered, proactive young woman with unimaginable magic inside her. This is fast-paced, sensuous writing with believable incantations inspired by Warburton's research into witchcraft legend and old English.

A Witch In Love - Book #2

Goodreads Synopsis:

Anna still finds it hard to believe that Seth loves her and has vowed to suppress her powers, no matter what.
But magic – like love – is uncontrollable. It spills out with terrible consequences, and soon, Anna is being hunted
.
The second novel in the Winter trilogy is due out 5th July 2012 from Hodder Children’s Books.

Hi Guys!  I'm really happy to announce that Chocolate Chunky Munkie is participating in the Blog Tour for Royally BeSwitched by Molly Snow.  This book is the third book in the BeSwitched series.  For my stop on the tour I have a guest post from Molly.

Guest Post by Molly Snow - Sneak Peek Into Royally BeSwitched

Hi, Jenny! Thanks again for having me on your blog. For Chocolate Chunky Munkie, I decided to share an excerpt from Royally BeSwitched. This is a peek into a private moment with the peasant girl and the prince--only Noella (the peasant) has switched bodies with Surla, so she is a black cat! There other sweet moments like this throughout the book, maybe making this my favorite of the series.

The prince laid gently back on his bed, propped against the headboard with some pillows. Noella remained as still as possible, laying across his chest, not wanting to ruin her luck. She had never been this close to a boy, let alone a handsome prince.
He took in a deep breath and sighed, starting to pet her as he looked up at the ceiling. She could feel his heartbeat against her chest. “What am I going to do, cat?”
Noella remained quiet, taking in the moment.
“I am eighteen years old now. Mother and Father expect me to choose a girl for marriage soon. It is my birthday ball this Friday, and I am not in love with anyone… And there was a girl the other day…”
Esme came to her thoughts, and how she had entered his chamber in her seductive dress. Yes, Esme, she knew.
“My mother was mad at her, thinking she had purposefully placed a hair in her pie…”
Noella’s heart skipped. Me!
“The look on that poor girl’s face. I knew she didn’t do it.”
He knows! She perked up a bit.
“I felt terrible for her. I told Mother to please be easy on her later that night. Mother has had hard times, and so she can be too hard on others. Earlier that evening I heard her fighting with my father. He can be very insensitive.” He took a deep breath in before adding, “I can’t imagine the girl can clean this whole chateau night and day, sweeping and mopping…”
A purr started up again. His eyes shifted down to the feline. “Where did you come from?”
Noella considered responding to him, like Surla did with her just the other day in the closet. She held back her strong desire.
“You have a lovely bell there, cat. You must have belonged to somebody… Is it right for me to keep you?”
Feeling a sudden surge of courage, she rubbed her little chin across his chin, purring some more.
He chuckled. “I like you, you know that? I would like to keep you.”
She laid the side of her head into the crevice between his neck and chin, and listened to his breath.
“I will ask around if anyone has seen you before. I hope I can keep you. I hope no one says you are theirs.” He exhaled a strong sigh, and his breath tickled her. The two laid there a while longer, deep in thought, until they drifted to sleep.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Author Andy Gavin

I'm very excited to welcome author Andy Gavin here to Chocolate Chunky Munkie. Andy has very kindly done a guest post for me and there is also a rafflecopter giveaway below.  Enjoy!

Guest post by Andy Gavin -Sarah Englemann: Our Protagonist

Sarah thinks of herself as a normal seventeen year-old. Well that's not exactly true, she's pretty sure she's exceptional, but only when it comes to school and books. The rest of it: fitting in, boys, that doesn't come as easy.
And she certainly doesn't believe corpses can leave their graves and try to kill you!
But the undead can be convincing. Not to mention that she keeps having these horrible visions.
The bookish thing, that she gets from her father. And he isn't exactly Joe cool either — even if he is named Joseph. But things are clearer for him. He doesn't have to fit in, he's got his Rabbi cronies from the old world to hang with. But this is 1913, and Sarah's a modern woman. No way she's going to put up with corsets, no vote, and popping out a big brood.
Again, none of this takes into account what happens when something really old takes an interest in her. A sorcerer who was ancient when Sarah's people crossed out of Egypt has turned his evil eye her way. And Papa Joseph has his secrets too. Turns out the family wasn't the only thing he brought to Massachusetts from Europe. But he's sure all that is ancient history.
However the dead have all the time in the world. The vampire Nasir has been sent to sniff around. And he loves a good hunt.
To further complicate things, this is finally the year when Sarah meets that boy.

Wishlist Wednesday #37

Every Wednesday, Dani at Pen To Paper features Wishlist Wednesday, a meme in which you can list a book that you really want to read or keep meaning to get. These are books that you want to add to your wishlist, and believe me there are plenty!  I've decided to use Dani's feature every Wednesday :)

So what do you need to do to join in?
  • Follow Pen to Paper as host of the meme.
  • Pick a book from your wishlist that you are dying to get to put on your shelves.
  • Do a post telling your readers about the book and why it's on your wishlist.
  • Add your blog to the linky at the bottom of her post.
  • Put a link back to pen to paper (http://www.pentopaperblog.com/) somewhere in your post.
  • Visit the other blogs and enjoy!

So here is my book for this weeks Wishlist Wednesday:

Goodreads Synopsis:

With every fiber of my being, I yearned to be normal. To glide through my days at Iverson without incident. But I’d have to face the fact that my life was about to unfold in a very, very different way than I’d ever envisioned. Normal would become forever out of reach.”

Lora Jones has always known that she’s different. On the outside, she appears to be an ordinary sixteen-year-old girl. Yet Lora’s been keeping a heartful of secrets: She hears songs that no one else can hear, dreams vividly of smoke and flight, and lives with a mysterious voice inside her that insists she’s far more than what she seems.

England, 1915. Raised in an orphanage in a rough corner of London, Lora quickly learns to hide her unique abilities and avoid attention. Then, much to her surprise, she is selected as the new charity student at Iverson, an elite boarding school on England’s southern coast. Iverson’s eerie, gothic castle is like nothing Lora has ever seen. And the two boys she meets there will open her eyes and forever change her destiny.

Jesse is the school’s groundskeeper—a beautiful boy who recognizes Lora for who and what she truly is. Armand is a darkly handsome and arrogant aristocrat who harbors a few closely guarded secrets of his own. Both hold the answers to her past. One is the key to her future. And both will aim to win her heart. As danger descends upon Iverson, Lora must harness the powers she’s only just begun to understand, or else lose everything she dearly loves.

Filled with lush atmosphere, thrilling romance, and ancient magic, The Sweetest Dark brilliantly captures a rich historical era while unfolding an enchanting love story that defies time.

I saw this book a few days ago featured on another blog.  I thought it sounded really cool, I really want to find out about Lora's unique abilities.  It sounds like nothing I have ever read before, so I am quite excited about it.  The cover is to die for, the colours and the smoky dress just pop out at me.  It's not released until August, so I will be eagerly awaiting its release :D

Musing Monday #9

Musing Mondays is a weekly feature hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.  Each week MizB asks a book related question and we have to give our answers.

This week’s musing asks…

Do you set goals for yourself, while reading? For example, “I want to get this book finished this weekend“, or “I will read __ pages today“, etc. Why, or why not?

Absolutely not!  I hate reading goals as I always feel like a caged bird.  For me reading is fun and unrestricted.  I want to enjoy it and start to feel under pressure if I have to set goals.  Now I have my kindle I tend to find I read more.  It is so easy to pick up and put down.  So even if I am sat waiting in the car for someone I will often pick up my kindle and read a couple of pages. Also I never used to take books out and about with me in my bag, as they were always getting raggy edges.  Now I can take my kindle and because it has a cover it is protected.  I tend to read my paperbacks at home and my kindle out and about and at work.  So I always have more than one book on the go at any one time.

So again no no no to reading goals.  I don't like them!

**** Review*** Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake

Released: July 5th 2012
Publisher: Orchard Books
Series: Yes # 1 in the Anna series
Format: Paperback
Source: From the Publisher for review
Find At:  Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon | The Book Depository
Author Website:  Kendare Blake

Goodreads Synopsis:

Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills-people story...

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until his gruesome murder by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn’t expect anything outside of the ordinary: move, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, but now stained red and dripping blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

And she, for whatever reason, spares his life.

My Review:

Cas Lockwood has an unusual gift that he inherited from his father; he is basically a ghost killer. He has a blade that can send the most scariest spook to another plane. Not all ghosts are nice; some are killers and have been known to bump people off in the most horrible of ways. So Cas does a very noble job. He is given information about a scary and menacing ghost called Anna Dressed in Blood. She is truly terrifying and there have been tales of people who have gone into Anna’s house never to come out again..... well not whole anyway. Cas gets to meet Anna but things don’t go to plan and he finds that he can’t get rid of her quite so easily. Are his emotions getting in the way? Sometimes things are not always what they first seem......... I’d seen this book nearly everywhere.

Falling in love is against the rules between these two enemies. Because Remy has the power to make Protectors human again, and when they find out, they’ll becoming for her—if Asher doesn’t kill her first.

This is Book One in the Touched trilogy.

I saw this one a few weeks ago on a friend on Goodread's wishlist.  Even though the cover doesn't necessarily jump out at me, the blurb sounds interesting.  It's not out until November 2012, so there is a little wait yet.  But on the wishlist it has gone :D

Final Blogoversary Post - Giveaway of The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper FForde

Hi Guys!  Well this is the last event of my Blogoversary celebrations.  I've had great fun posting and have had some really lovely comments.

So my final thank you to my followers is a signed first edition hardback copy of The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde.

A couple of weeks ago myself and Dani @ Pen To Paper were very excited to go to a fun filled weekend at the Fforde Ffiesta event. This is basically an event celebrating all the fabulous things from the books by author Jasper Fforde.  Whilst there I managed to get a book signed for this giveaway.  So here are the details of the book - you can see my review of The Last Dragonslayer HERE.

Goodreads Synopsis:

In the good old days, magic was powerful, unregulated by government, and even the largest spell could be woven without filling in the magic release form B1-7g. But somewhere, somehow, the magic started draining away.

Jennifer Strange runs Kazam!, an employment agency for state-registered magicians, soothsayers and sorceresses. But work is drying up. Drain cleaner is cheaper and quicker than a spell. Why trust a cold and drafty magic carpet when jetliners offer a comfy seat and an in-flight movie? And now potions are eligible for VAT...

But then the visions start. The Last Dragon is going to be killed by a Dragonslayer at 12.00 on Sunday. The death will unleash untold devastation on the UnUnited Kingdom, setting principality against dukedom and property developer against homesteader. And all the signs are pointing to Jennifer Strange, and saying"Big Magic is coming!"

The Last Dragonslayer is fizzing with all the creativity and genius Jasper Fforde's fans delight in, and will appeal as much to the young at heart as to the younger readers for whom it is written.

My Review:

Magic is dying, years ago magic was very strong and many dragons roamed the land. But times have changed. All the dragons bar one have been slain and magic has weakened. We meet Jennifer Strange, a sixteen year old girl who runs a magical agency. Jennifer has to organise the wizards and soothsayers to do very menial tasks such as unblocking drains and re-wiring houses. In fact magic has gone so weak people are using normal means to do these menial tasks, making Jennifer’s job a lot lot harder! When visions start happening about the last dragon being slain by the last dragon slayer, Jennifer’s life gets a bit complicated. Big Magic is going to happen and it could have devastating consequences for the UnUnited Kingdom.

Guest Review and Q&A's - Blogger Adeeb@ Bookville

I put a shout out on twitter for anyone who wanted to contribute to my Blogoversary celebrations and Adeeb@ Bookville got in touch.

For Adeeb's contribution there is a review of Shatter Me by Tahera Mafi and some Q&A's from Adeeb himself.

You can visit Adeeb's blog HERE and also he has a YouTube channel (where he Vlogs) you can visit it  HERE

 Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Goodreads Synopsis:

Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color. The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

Adeebs's Review:

Before I start my review, I'd like to talk about the two covers. The old cover (top) is very cliche. I do not like it. We've seen girls dressed up for a cover a book million times. I'm really glad Harper Collins decided to change the cover to the new one (bottom). It perfectly resembles the story.

This book was unique. One of a kind.
This book kept me reading. Addicted.

Yes, I really enjoyed this book. The idea is wonderful. Suppose you have a power curse, but your power doesn't help people. It kills people.

What I liked about this book:

1-Writing style: Hands down, the best thing about this book was the writing style. Tahereh Mafi truly writes beautifully. Shatter Me is her debut novel, but it's is perfectly polished. It doesn't feel like it is a first-time published book. It is full of imagery and visuals. You see the site of birds, waterfalls, nature... Another really fascinating writing technique was the crossing out. Congratulations Tahereh Mafi, you have brought created a new unique writing style into literature.

2-Narrative: I think our main character, Juliette, had a very authentic voice. The way she sees things is very different than any character in young adult books.

3-Ending: While I was reading throughout the 330 page book, I never knew where this book was gonna go. The story went somewhere I did not expect at all. It gave this bad-ass epic feel to it, made me smile.

What I didn't like about this book:

1- Romance: I've reached a point where I don't mind romance books anymore, and sometimes I feel that there's something missing in the book. However, with Shatter Me, I thought Tahereh Mafi overdid the romance. It felt like Juliette thought about her romance way too much. There was too much emphasis on descriptions. There was too much kissing. Kissing the lips, necks, nose. It made me a little uncomfortable at many instances.

Overall, this book is an amazing debut novel full of adventure. Tahereh Mafi is a brilliant writer and I can't wait to read Unravel Me.

Questions & Answers with Adeeb @ Bookville

What is your blog mainly about?
As the title suggests, it is about books. All my posts are reviews of books I read. There is one cover reveal. I plan to expand my blog though. I'm gonna be doing interviews with authors soon. I'm gonna try to participate in some memes as well. So, let's say it is in the beginning stage.
How did you come up with your blog name?
Well, I was an admin on a facebook page, Mera's YA Book List, and I thought: hmm, maybe I should make a facebook page too. So I talked with Mera and she came up with a few suggestions. We kept thinking of some, until I finally came up with Bookville.
What inspired you to start blogging?
I have always been fascinated by reading people's reviews. Also, I always wanted to express my thoughts on a book. So, I first started writing reviews on Goodreads. My reviews were quite amateurish. They were very short and talked very generally. So, the more reviews I read, I was able to learn how to express more. As a result, I came up with my blog and started writing reviews that I'm really happy with.
What book would you recommend?
I read LOTS and LOTS of YA. I wouldn't want to recommend very popular books. So, I will choose something I really love.
1-series:The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare
2-standalone: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Name three of your favorite authors.
I would love to say J.K. Rowling, but that is probably almost everybody's favorite.
So, I choose:

3 male:
1-Rick Riordan
2-Patrick Ness
3-Darren Shan

3 female:
1-Suzanne Collins
2-Cassandra Clare
3-Veronica

P.S. There authors are in no particular order. Also, there are more but these are top 3!

Once again thank you Adeeb for taking the time to answer my questions and for your excellent review of Shatter Me :D

But Egypt may hold more mysteries than even the indomitable Lady Maccon can handle. What does the vampire Queen of the Alexandria Hive really want from her?  As a little girl, Daisy Appleby was killed in a school bus crash. Moments after the accident, she was brought back to life.

A secret government agency has developed a drug called Revive that can bring people back from the dead, and Daisy Appleby, a test subject, has been Revived five times in fifteen years. Daisy takes extraordinary risks, knowing that she can beat death, but each new death also means a new name, a new city, and a new life. When she meets Matt McKean, Daisy begins to question the moral implications of Revive, and as she discovers the agency’s true goals, she realizes she’s at the center of something much larger—and more sinister—than she ever imagined.
I spotted this as one of my Goodreads recommendations, the blurb just jumped out at me.  I think it sounds really intruiging. I have heard of Cat Patrick but I've never read any of her books.  I think I will have to remedy that and get my hands on a copy of Revived.  This one is out now.

Musing Mondays #8

Musing Mondays is a weekly feature hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.  Each week MizB asks a book related question and we have to give our answers.

This week’s musing asks…

What is the longest book you have ever read? How long did it take you to read it?

The longest book I have ever tackled in my life was a whopper.  I had to read it sat at a table because it used to be too heavy to hold for long periods of time.  I was 14 at the time and I borrowed the whole complete The Lord of the Rings series by J R R Tolkien, it came in one book and boy was it massive!

A few of my friends had checked it out the library, but they couldn't manage to finish it.  I did manage it!!  But it took me two months to read.  The librarian was very understanding and gave me extensions.  But I am pleased I finished this mammoth tome as it was a brilliant book.  I was so thrilled they made films from the books, as it was lovely to revisit it later on in life.

This books sounds brilliant.  I want to know more about Evelyn Winters and her life in the underwater utopia Elysium.  It sounds just my kind of book and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy when it is released in November.  The book cover looks so pretty, I love the colour scheme.
