Wishlist Wednesday #16

Every Wednesday, Dani at Pen To Paper features Wishlist Wednesday, a meme in which you can list a book that you really want to read or keep meaning to get. These are books that you want to add to your wishlist, and believe me there are plenty!  I've decided to use Dani's feature every Wednesday :)

So what do you need to do to join in?
  • Follow Pen to Paper as host of the meme.
  • Pick a book from your wishlist that you are dying to get to put on your shelves.
  • Do a post telling your readers about the book and why it's on your wishlist.

So here is my book for this weeks Wishlist Wednesday:

Goodreads Synopsis:

It was a beautiful, warm summer day, the day Danny died.
Suddenly Wren was alone and shattered. In a heartbroken fury, armed with dark incantations and a secret power, Wren decides that what she wants—what she must do—is to bring Danny back.
But the Danny who returns is just a shell of the boy Wren fell in love with. His touch is icy; his skin, smooth and stiff as marble; his chest, cruelly silent when Wren rests her head against it.
Wren must keep Danny a secret, hiding him away, visiting him at night, while her life slowly unravels around her. Then Gabriel DeMarnes transfers to her school, and Wren realizes that somehow, inexplicably, he can sense the powers that lie within her—and that he knows what she has done. And now Gabriel wants to help make things right.
But Wren alone has to undo what she has wrought—even if it means breaking her heart all over again.

I've had this book on my wishlist since October.  I think it was the cover and book name that first caught my attention.  After reading the blurb I was sucked in a thought it sounded an amazing book.  It just shows the lengths people will go to keep a loved one close, even a deceased loved one!!

The Time Will Come #17

Every Thursday, Jodie at Books For Company hosts The Time Will Come, a weekly meme in which we list a book that we really want to read or keep meaning to get to. These are mostly books that have been on the TBR shelf for awhile now but also they can be books that have just come into my home.  I have a massive to-read pile, it seems to be growing by the day.....

If you'd like to join in?

  • Pick a book you have been meaning to read
  • Do a post telling us about the book
  • Link the post up in the linky on Jodie's blog.
  • Visit the other blogs!

Here is my choice for this weeks Time Will Come:

Goodreads Synopsis:
A novel set mostly in Afghanistan. The introverted and insecure afghan narrator, Amir, grows up in Afghanistan in the closing years of the monarchy and the first years of the short-lived republic. His best and most faithful friend, Hassan, is the son of a servant. Amir feels he betrays Hassan by not coming to his aid when Hassan is set on by bullies and furthermore forces Hassan and his father Ali to leave his father´s service. Amir´s relatively priviledged life in Kaboul comes to an end when the communist regime comes to power and his extrovert father, Baba emigrates with him to the U.S. There Amir meets his future, afghan wife and marries her. Amir´s father dies in the U.S. and Amir receives a letter from his father´s most trusted business partner and, for a time, Amir´s surrogate father, which makes Amir return, alone, to a Taliban-dominated Afghanistan in search of the truth about himself and his family, and finally, a sort of redemption.

I read A Thousand Splendid Suns by this author and thought it was a very thought provoking and powerful novel.  I would really like to read The Kite Runner as I think it would be just as good.  It has sat on my bookcase gathering dust for years now.  I'm afraid shiny new books keep distracting  me away from it.  No excuse really?!?

What books do you have on your bookcase that you just can't wait to read?

So here is my book for this weeks Wishlist Wednesday:

Goodreads Synopsis:

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

I think if I see a male character with green eyes, I'm already sucked into the book :)  So when I read the blurb and spotted the bit that said "until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up"  well that got my attention alright lol.I have a few of Jennifer Armitrout's books on my shelves, this is a new series and souds brilliant!  I have seen it advertised and reviewed everywhere, so on my wishlist it goes :)

***Review*** Suspense by Jason Letts

Released : 3rd September 2011
Publisher: Self - Published
Series :Yes #1 in the Spencer Nye series
Format :Kindle
Source : Author review
Author Site:  Jason Letts
Goodreads Synopsis:
Spencer Nye can’t control the rage bubbling under her skin over the world around her. The trouble is, by the year 2102, the world has solved most of its great problems. Without hunger, war, greed, or even money, people obsess over the glamour of the Culture Industry and its mega-celebrity Idols, who vie for followers over the social networks of Connect.

But Spencer discovers there is plenty to fix within the Idols’ competition for more popularity. She becomes a diehard and promises to do anything to help her Idol, a dreamy movie star named Cleary Mintz, bring his vision of hope and purpose to the world. When she stumbles onto a threat against his life, she’ll have to fight harder than she ever thought possible or lose the man who means more to her than any other.

Suspense, the first book in a dystopian trilogy, contains 76,000 words and is recommended for ages 16 and up because of depictions of violence and some sexual themes.

 My review:

I was given a copy of this book to review from the author.

Suspense is a fast paced and edgy thriller.  It does border on the weird and wacky at times, but then again this is a dystopian book so anything goes really.  It really brings home how a society depends on social networking.  I liked the futuristic feel of this book, you kind of think it’s possible that this world could happen.

I will say that it did take me a few good chapters to get into this book, at times I felt it pretty hard going.  But I am glad I finished it, the ending was the best part.  I did like the concept of the story but at times I think it went a bit flat.  I’m not going to knock this book too much as I did think it made an interesting and colourful read.

I have to admit I didn’t really bond with the main character Spence, I found her a bit of a cold and complex character.  But hey some characters are developed to be like this, we can’t always like everyone.

I would like to read book two in the series, just to see what’s next in store for the main character Spencer Nye.

Story rating 3/5 – I’m not sure really what to make of this book.  I don’t think it helped that I didn’t particularly like the main character.

Cover Rating 2/5 -  Not really a cover I personally like.  I love the colour scheme, but the figure of the girl does not do it any justice.

About the Author:
If you've lived through the American educational system, you can understand that things get pretty boring from time to time, and so I spent a lot of my youth disappearing into stories, whether they be movies, video games, or books. They were vibrant and exciting, each of them about achieving something wonderful despite all odds.

That was the kind of thing I wanted when I finished my degree and went to teach English in Japan. I was battling the language barrier and discovering new people, but then of course I met something even more paralyzing than the American educational system, the Japanese educational system. In both places there were tons of incredible professionals doing the best to help students develop, and I have benefited directly from so many great teachers, but this time I around I started writing stories of my own instead of absorbing them.

Now I write young-adult fiction in a variety of its sub-genres. I'm lucky enough to do this for a living, and I hope I'll be able to keep doing it for a very long time. To all of my wonderful readers, thank you so very much!
